If you’re redoing your kitchen and want to keep it green (in spirit, not just colour), eco-friendly paint is a smart move. Regular paint is full of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that stink up your house, mess with your lungs, and hang around in the air longer than they should. In a kitchen — where you’re breathing deep over a pot of stew or wiping down walls — that’s the last thing you need.

In Canada, you’ve got some decent options. Benjamin Moore Eco Spec is made here, zero-VOC, and available pretty much coast-to-coast. It’s solid for kitchens — washable, tough, no chemical stink. If you’re shopping at a big box store, Behr’s Premium Plus line (available at Home Depot) is Greenguard Gold certified and reasonably priced — not the greenest of the green, but a huge upgrade from standard paint.
If you’re looking for boutique-level clean ingredients, ECOS Paints and Clare are solid. They’re more common online but ship to Canada. ECOS is about as pure as it gets, originally developed for people with severe chemical sensitivities. Downside? It costs more, and you’ll probably be ordering from the States.
Want something natural and off the beaten path? Look into BioShield — they do clay- and plant-based paints. Not super common in Canadian stores, but available online. Good for old homes with plaster walls or if you’re going for that breathable, cottagecore vibe.
And if you’re the DIY type, you could whip up your own paint with hydrated lime, casein (milk protein), or even flour paste — yes, really. Old-school recipes, but they work and they’re biodegradable. Just don’t expect modern washability — they’re more for decorative walls than splatter zones.
Last note: even low-VOC paint can off-gas, especially in winter when windows are closed. So ventilate well, and if you’re painting cabinets or shelves, let them cure a good week before putting dishes back in.
